Design classic (16) – the steamer trunk

Comments from DesignStaging: so multi-functional in any space. Great blog!

Caribbean Living

Haaaappy Friday folks, what are you up to this weekend??  We’re going climbing tomorrow and then off to Singas again on Sunday – looking forward to another dose of that city!

So for today’s design classic post I thought I would take a closer look at something that’s been playing on my mind for approximately the last three years: the vintage steamer trunk.

Whether they’re used as a table, bar, end-of-bed-storage or simply to add a touch of vintage charm to a space, these puppies seriously have impact. I actually really dislike the ones made into chests with drawers (why would you do that to a gorgeous vintage piece?!) but the real deal trunks and suitcases are firmly lodged in my heart.  All I can say is that Restoration Hardware have a lot to answer for…

Comment by DesignStaging: Happy August… paint gives this china cabinet a new lease on life…. wonderful diy post!

Hi Everyone! As promised, here is my china cabinet makeover.

I purchased this china cabinet at a store I love called Almost Paris Antiques. I got a really good price on it too! It is solid mahogany, all the doors and the drawer were in great condition. No major flaws except a bubble on the side. When I saw it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I fell in love with the cut outs on the glass doors and the old brass pulls. The pulls were completely blackened by age and time. I wanted to make this a more modern piece but keep the old charm.

So, here is how I did it. A lot of people are scared to paint furniture, but if you use the right tools and technique it is so worth it!

Supplies:

Wood filler, that can be sanded and painted

A Decorator's Notebook

My love of grey is well known, but to team it up with gold is an interesting choice…..the obvious would be to coordinate it with silver, but as these images show, gold works really beautifully, particularly on furniture!

This silver grey velvet is lush and glamorous and teamed with the antique gold finish on that table behind it is just perfect!

The Fabulous Scavenger

Last week I asked the question, what colour should I choose for this weeks colour inspiration? Well, one of my readers, Renea, requested lime green, so lime green it is.
Lime green is a fun, happy colour. It works really well in children’s bedrooms, I love it with dark brown furniture and white walls, and it also looks glorious with hot pink. I rummaged around my thrifty belongings only to find I really don’t have that much lime green in my decor. I gave it some thought and have come up with simple, cheap ideas to bring lime green into your life.

Here’s my humble little kitchen. I like that it’s white, so I can accessorise with any colour. Here it is wearing green. The platter that the apples are sitting on was a lucky side of the road find. Someone was getting rid of wine making equipment. There were…
